Pelvic pain that started after surgery — United States focus

Medically reviewed by Dr Renaud Bollens — Professor of Urology

United States focus

What patients in the United States should know about post surgical pelvic nerve pain, and how care abroad fits alongside care at home.

Pain that begins after a pelvic operation and does not follow the expected healing curve should raise the question of nerve injury, entrapment in scar tissue or fixation by mesh.

The pattern matters: pain in a nerve territory, triggered by position, with altered sensation, is different from ordinary post-operative soreness.

Dr Bollens assesses post-surgical cases regularly, including patients who have had several operations already. Reviewing operative notes is a standard part of that work-up.

US patients keep their local physician in the loop throughout; we share our written opinion with them directly on request.
