Pelvic and perineal pain that persists after childbirth — United States focus

Medically reviewed by Dr Renaud Bollens — Professor of Urology

United States focus

What patients in the United States should know about pelvic pain after childbirth, and how care abroad fits alongside care at home.

Stretch injury to the pudendal nerve during delivery is well described. Pain that persists beyond the normal recovery period, particularly with burning or numbness, should be assessed as nerve pain.

Mothers are frequently told to wait. Waiting is reasonable for months, not for years.

A structured review can end that uncertainty quickly, one way or the other.

US patients keep their local physician in the loop throughout; we share our written opinion with them directly on request.
