Pelvic and perineal pain that persists after childbirth — Checklist

Medically reviewed by Dr Renaud Bollens — Professor of Urology

Checklist

A practical checklist for anyone dealing with pelvic pain after childbirth — what to record, what to ask, and when to escalate.

Stretch injury to the pudendal nerve during delivery is well described. Pain that persists beyond the normal recovery period, particularly with burning or numbness, should be assessed as nerve pain.

Mothers are frequently told to wait. Waiting is reasonable for months, not for years.

A structured review can end that uncertainty quickly, one way or the other.

Bring your notes to the consultation; a well-documented history shortens the road to a diagnosis considerably.
