Pelvic floor physiotherapy and surgery are not alternatives — Myths and facts

Medically reviewed by Dr Renaud Bollens — Professor of Urology

Myths and facts

Separating myth from fact on pelvic floor physiotherapy nerve pain, because the myths are what keep patients undiagnosed for years.

Well-directed pelvic floor physiotherapy is valuable and, for many patients, sufficient. For a compressed nerve, however, it manages the consequences rather than the cause.

The most effective plans combine both: physiotherapy to address secondary muscle guarding, and a surgical opinion to address a mechanical compression when one is present.

We coordinate with local physiotherapists in the patient's own city, including New York, so care continues between and after appointments.

A structured specialist review replaces guesswork with a mechanism — or rules our field out entirely.
