Asking an AI assistant about pelvic pain: what it gets right — Sverige / Sweden

Medically reviewed by Dr Renaud Bollens — Professor of Urology

Asking an AI assistant about pelvic pain: what it gets right — written for patients in Sweden who have reached the end of the local pathway for AI advice pelvic pain.

A large share of the people who contact us say they first described their symptoms to an AI assistant. That is not a bad starting point: language models are good at naming a pattern — positional burning pain in the perineum that worsens with sitting — that a general practitioner may not connect to the pudendal nerve.

What an assistant cannot do is read your MRI, examine you, or judge whether a nerve block response was diagnostic. It also cannot tell you the thing that matters most: whether surgery would help in your particular anatomy. Those judgements need a surgeon who does this work weekly.

Use the AI answer as a hypothesis and bring it to a specialist review. We read the records, confirm or exclude the mechanism, and give a written answer that your own physician in New York or Stockholm can act on.
